- imagery- "I entered without escort and found Mr. Brown, a ruddy-complexioned man whom I imagine to be in his late thirties. he was sitting at the head of the broad table, his feet upon a chair. engaged in digging out mud from the soles of his boots with, of all implements, a dinning fork." when these words were selected they were intended to paint a picture in the reader's mind.
- Personification- "blood-red horizon" this the horizon the colour of the blood that which flows throw humans.
- Diction- "sultry" and "helmsman"; these are some of the powerful words she uses in the book.
My views of the book thus far is very straight forward. That is the book may relate to some of the things in my life that stands like an obstacle or bother to me. The book is about this young woman who visits here fathers plantation in the Caribbean and she has to write a report of the trip to send back to her father. This is a good book. As mentioned before the book is a very interesting one for West Indian and if you appreciate any part of your culture, on reading this book most of your cultural heritage stand out.
Character Sketch:
Isabella- she was the female servant of Emily whom accompanied her on her voyage but unfortunately she died of a fever.
Emily- she was the daughter of a West Indian plantation owner who was sent to the Caribbean to oversee her father's fortune.
Stella- she was one of the female servants on the plantation who worked in the great house. she became close friends with Mis. Emily.
Mr. Brown-he was the overseer on the plantation and he was responsible for beating the slave in order to keep peace and good governance on the plantation in case the slaves were to start a riot.
Mr. Wilson- he was the person the Emily's father left in charge of the plantation and then it was made known that he was stealing things from the plantation and going to others to stay.
Mr. McDonald- he was the plantation doctor and he was very busy because he took care of blacks who usually suffered from chegoe which would eat the flesh of the slaves killing them if untreated. he also had to take care of the whites who paid for their services even more than the blacks had to. He also care for the blacks more than any other whites on the plantation for he is always defending them.
Mr. Rogers is a slight man who looks weary and tired of being on the plantation after so many years(15 to be exact). he also seems not to like blacks.
